Aryeh Kobrinsky
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba...
Grew up in Fargo, North Dakota.
Since 2005, he has quickly established himself as a creative and versatile bassist on the New York jazz scene. Aryeh stands at the vanguard of a new generation of instrumental performers for whom the notion of genre is becoming increasingly ambiguous.
Having toured Europe, North Africa, Canada and the United States Aryeh has performed with a wide variety of artists including Ralph Alessi, Matt Wilson, Bob Moses, Don Byron, and Dominique Eade.
Past mentors include Dave Holland, Danilo Perez, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Don Palma and John Heiss. In 2005, he attended the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music directed by Dave Douglas where he studied and performed with Han Bennink, Vijay Iyer, Mark Dresser and Dave Douglas.
Aryeh calls upon a wide variety of influences such as Meshuggah, Charles Mingus, Kenny Dorham, Tom Cora, Bela Bartok, Schubert, The Beatles and Charles Ives. His ‘acoustic-metal’ quintet BRINSK is a perfect example of how these eclectic influences come together in composition, improvisation and performance to form a cohesive identity. The Montreal Gazette says “acoustic metal might sound like an oxymoron to some but to Aryeh Kobrinsky it is a viable compositional style and a no-holds-barred approach to performance.”
Aryeh is a co-founder of Nowt Records, a not-for-profit cooperative independent label based in Brooklyn. Nowt released his debut album “A Hamster Speaks” in June, 2008. Aryeh can be seen performing regularly with projects/collaborations such as Dan Nettles’ Kenosha Kid; Girlfight (Tanya Kalmanovitch, Jacob Wick, Fred Kennedy); Pete Robbins’ Centric; Pierre François Quartet in Montreal; Dominique Eade Quartet, and last but not least his own quintet BRINSK.
